STATEMENT OF INTENT FOR SUPPORTING EQUALITY

At St John’s Church of England Primary School we aim for every pupil to fulfil their potential no matter what their needs.

We aim to:

Provide a secure and accessible environment in which all our children can flourish and in which all contributions are considered and valued;
Provide positive non-stereotyping information about gender roles, diverse ethnic and cultural groups and disabled people;
Improve our knowledge and understanding of issues of anti-discriminatory practice, promoting equality and valuing diversity;
Include and value the contribution of all families to our understanding of equality and diversity; and
Make inclusion a thread that runs through all of the activities of the school.

St John’s Church of England Primary School prides itself on being inclusive and will endeavour to support every child regardless of their level of need. All pupils follow the National Curriculum at a level and a pace that is appropriate to their abilities.

To successfully match pupil ability to the curriculum there are some actions we may take to achieve this:

Ensure that all pupils have access to the school curriculum and school activities in order to promote the highest levels of achievement.
Help all pupils achieve to the best of their abilities, despite any difficulty or disability they may have.
Ensure that teaching staff are aware of and sensitive to the needs of all pupils, teaching pupils in a way that is more appropriate to their needs.
Pupils will gain in confidence and improve their self-esteem.
Promote self-worth and enthusiasm by encouraging independence at all age and ability levels.
To work in partnership with parents/carers, pupils and relevant external agencies in order to provide for children’s special educational needs and disabilities.

To make suitable provision for children with SEND to fully develop their abilities, interests and aptitudes and gain maximum access to the curriculum.
To regularly review the policy and practice in order to achieve best practice.

Local Offer

Find out what support and services are available in Bath and North East Somerset for children and young people under 25 years old, who have additional needs, using our local offer (Rainbow Resource) website.

Talk to your child’s school

Talk to your child’s school if you feel that your child might need some extra support. Most settings have trained staff who can identify and support children and young people’s additional needs. They will have a member of staff responsible for SEND, called the ‘Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator’, or ‘SENDCo’, who should help plan the best course of action.

A local offer is about the help and support BATHNES offer to children and young people with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND). The Rainbow Resource website provides all of our information about what help and support is available in Bath and North East Somerset.

BANES offer a free Rainbow Resource card to all children and young people aged between 0-25 years, with a Special Educational Need and/ or Disability (SEND) or an additional need, living across Bath and North East Somerset. This entitles the child/young person or their designated carer, to a concession at venues across B&NES and access to specific SEND sessions.
