Intent
At St John’s C of E Primary School, reading is a top priority and at the heart of our curriculum. It is our intention to ensure that by the end of their primary education, all pupils are able to read fluently and with confidence, in any subject in their forthcoming secondary education and for lifelong learning.
We therefore intend to encourage all pupils to read widely across both fiction and non-fiction to develop: knowledge of themselves and the world in which they live; to establish an appreciation and love of reading; to gain knowledge across the curriculum; and develop their comprehension skills. We are committed to providing vocabulary rich reading material.
Roald Dahl Day
To commemorate Roald Dahl Day on the 13th September, Year 5 enjoyed a Friday full of Dahl themed English and Guided reading lessons.
In English, both classes looked at Roald Dahl's character descriptions and discussed how vocabulary was used to provide negative and positive connotations and exaggerate the personality and appearance of these characters. Pupils then had a go at drawing and describing their own character, choosing whether to make them a vile villain or a humble hero.
In Guided Reading, we used a strategy known as readers theater to merge playing, performing and oral reading together to practise and perform The Lion by Roald Dahl. Both classes enjoyed practicing the poem with different expressions and pacing before some enthusiastic, engaging and humorous performances!
